Tools for Peace is the community outreach program of the non-profit Shi-tro Mandala for Universal Peace Project. Using the blueprint of the Mandala as a means to build community and teach peace education, Tools for Peace offers an art-based curriculum centered on the basic structure of the Mandala. This basic blueprint of the Mandala is a valuable tool for teaching teamwork, focus and non-violence, and is accessible and meaningful to people of all traditions and cultures. The Shi-tro Mandala contains specific symbols that represent principles such as compassion and tolerance. These symbols are used to offer the community methods to deal with the causes of conflict, such as anger, prejudice and ignorance.
The following free community-building activities are being offered in upcoming weeks and months.
1. Personal Paper Mandalas - Adults, children and teens can learn about the Shi-Tro Mandala and create their own personal blueprint for peace on paper. There will be guided workshops led daily by peace educators, as well as a self-guided program. This will be an ongoing activity at the Glendale Galleria location, July 14-28, 12:30-closing every day. All are welcome.
2. Community Sand Mandala - Participants from the community will come together to create a Community Sand Mandala using icons and symbols relevant to their various cultures and histories. Individuals who become regular participants in this project will collectively decide which symbols are to be used. Held at the Galleria location July 22-27 following a one-day workshop July 21. (Call 818-599-8598 to register for the July 21 workshop.)
